On-line Services vs Download, Deploy Product (Discussion)

I met with another company and they were asking me if I knew if I’ve built a project management tool. I had told them I didn’t have to because I use basecamp.

I wasn’t trying to convince them on using it and emphasized it was simple and that I thought its more practical for small companies or freelancers like me.

When they asked how much you payed and I explained it was an on-line service with a monthly fee they were skeptical that the average business wouldn’t use it because they’d want something in house.

They also asked me if they’re was a special contract I had to agree to use it and I said, just the stand signup for this app kind of thing.

I guess they’re concern was with trusting another company to manage your private information.

I don’t know why people are worried about this? I used to have the same attitude towards on-line services but I thought about it and I trust my doctor, credit union and accountant with private information.

What are we suppose to do? Keep are money under the mattress and have a sowing kit handy because we don’t trust a doctor to sew it back on?

Do you think businesses are over-thinking and inventing bad scenarios before they even happen?

I think an on-line service like basecamp is no different than having a membership at your credit union.

It all depends on what kind of business the organisation is into & what potential threat they have from their competitors. We cannot simply come to a conclusion on this…..

For example many startups, mid sized companies use Amazon’s S3 (Simple Storage Service) for all their data needs..It is much more bigger in size when compared to base camp. Trust matters…
